Ladies Night Out
When a woman is the first to become pregnant in her circle of friends she starts down a path that is unfamiliar to her and many times she walks it alone. When her friends are staying out late at parties she is home exhausted from being pregnant or caring for her new baby. Her daily life is so different from before she was pregnant, her friends don't seem to understand. The support system she had up to now doesn’t apply anymore because her needs have changed.
Birthright sees woman in this situation every day. What we realized is that these new moms need each other - women who are facing, and have faced, the same struggles and challenges that she now faces. We know that the burden isn't so heavy when others walk with you. We believe that by giving the mom a night out it would take some pressure off and give her something to look forward to - a little extra attention and pampering to build her up.
Birthright's hope was that if we brought the ladies together lasting friendships would develop and continue outside the monthly Ladies Night Out meetings. The ladies know they have their Birthright volunteer always standing by them but now they have other friends as well.
To keep the gathering appealing we offer topics of interest that go beyond what is normally offered at the Birthright office. Topics that can enrich many areas of their lives such as:
- Nutrition and cooking on a budget
- Exercise – small steps to strengthen your body
- Gardening - learn how easy it is to make and care for container gardens
- Self defense – empowering women to listen to their instincts and techniques to keep them safe
- Physical Therapy – ways to stand, bend, and lift during pregnancy and after baby is born
- Journaling - the joy and satisfaction of recording your story
- Movies, Tea Parties, and Game Night which always spring into lively discussions
Ladies Night is held on the last Wednesday of each month from 6 to 8pm. We quickly grew out of our Birthright office and now meet down the street at St. Margaret’s church in Bel Air.
